A study tour to Sabah was successfully held for S2 students from April 27 to 30. The tour aimed to provide students with an opportunity to learn about the local culture and the importance of environmental protection outside the classroom.

On the first day upon arrival, students were taken to the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park to see the “superstars” in the animal kingdom of the island – proboscis monkey (Borneo long-nosed monkey) and orang-utans. These animals are endangered and very rare to be seen in the wild, which makes it such a treat to see them in person in the park. Apart from learning about the unique ecology of Sabah, students also visited Mari Mari Cultural Village to know more about the local tribal culture. In addition to tasting local delicacy, learning about the customs of village life and enjoying the traditional local dance, they got to hear some stories about the head hunters in Sabah!

On the second day of the tour, students had a glimpse of Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain in Borneo and Malaysia. It is a scared mountain to the locals, as well as a World Heritage Site. Students did a bit of hiking inside the national park and learnt more about the flora and fauna in the area. The most exciting part of the trip was the canopy walk in the rainforest. Students walked on the suspension bridges on top of the trees and enjoyed the wonderful view of the forest.

On the third day, students had a chance to mingle with some local students in a secondary school called SMK Narinang. The students watched some performances and had a wonderful morning chatting with each other.

The tour was indeed a wonderful learning experience for our students to get close to nature and learn the importance of protecting the environment.
