To help students to be better prepared for their further studies and to enhance their understanding of the business field, the Careers Team arranged for some S4 students to visit the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Shatin) on November 17. The visit included an admission information session, a campus tour as well as experiential activities. Students had an opportunity to participate in one of the following business-related taster programmes offered by the institute: Money in & out”, “Why should I hire you?” and “Not just accounting”.

Money in & out”

In this programme, students learnt about the nature of work in the banking field, as well as the necessary personality traits for a successful banker. They had an opportunity to experience what it is like to be a bank teller. Students were also briefed on the relevant undergraduate programmes offered by the institute.

“Why should I hire you?”

This programme introduced students to the hiring process and criteria of the Human Resources Department. Students were given four sample resumes of candidates with different academic qualifications and working experience. They then took the role of the Human Resources Manager and picked the candidate that was best suited for the position. Students were asked to give justifications for their choices and explain how to apply the hiring criteria.

“Not just accounting”.

Students were briefed on the accounting programmes offered by the institute as well as the related admission requirements. They also took part in various experiential activities through which they could learn more about the day-to-day work of an accountant in the real workplace.

Overall, students found the visit a rewarding experience. They enjoyed the experiential activities in particular through which they could get a glimpse of the actual work involved in different fields and gain inspirations for their career exploration.
